How Female Fitness Matters came to be

Taking two years to conceive my eldest daughter and finally becoming a mom was life changing, as it is for any woman, but it really focused my mind on wanting to lead a lifestyle that maximises my chances of being around for my family for as long as possible.

It’s also made me determined to be a positive role model to my girls growing up in a world obsessed with looks, dieting, technology and searching for a ‘cure’ to needing to exercise. I want them to grow up feeling comfortable in their own skin, knowledgeable about their bodies and empowered to make positive choices for themselves and their health.

A 16-year career in professional services with PwC, however, left me lacking some of the building blocks to achieve these aims – particularly the ones around C-section recovery and how best to strengthen my body post baby. And Google was little help, continually serving up conflicting and often inaccurate information.

The lifelong learner in me rubbed her hands in delight, therefore, when I decided to use my maternity leave to get the facts for myself at “PT school” and by studying advanced women’s health and fitness qualifications with Burrell Education.

I had no intention originally of coaching others, but what I learned was eye-opening. Once I understood just how much of an impact motherhood can have on the body and how the ‘right’ kind of programmes can transform the quality of women’s lives (which is now extending to menopause and other areas of women’s health), I became determined to share that knowledge to help others.

So after juggling my pregnancy and post natal fitness classes for several years alongside my corporate career with PwC, I made the decision to leave and I haven’t looked back. My focus is now entirely on serving local women and leading a lifestyle that I can flex to suit my family and one which keeps my focus on the importance of health and wellbeing. Both as a licensed instructor for From Bumps 2 Babies Limited in the Birmingham area and independently under my own brand, Female Fitness Matters.
